Winter Flowers in the Greenhouse

Winter Flowers in the Greenhouse

These past couple weeks have reminded us that even Olde Cape Cod is a high-speed society! There was the mad dash for firewood, ice melt, and shovels – and we’ve all dug ourselves out of the snow just to carry on with the hustle of life. Have you taken the time lately to let the outside pressure dissolve and unwind?

Our greenhouse, where the houseplants live, is a sanctuary in these winter months and we can’t highlight it enough. If you didn’t make it to ‘Breathing Room’ Saturdays in January, we still want to invite you to come in for a deep breath and feel inspired.

When you enter our store through the main entrance and take a left, a large wall fountain will greet you and serves as an invitation to activate your senses.

The greenhouse is not subject to the seasonal shuffling about, but rather it is consistently stocked year-round. Even day to day, the routine is steady and deliberate, as each plant is watered and nurtured. You will hear the creak of the water spigot, the hose dragging lightly on the floor, and the subsequent flow and splash of water. The smell of soil is grounding while jasmine and citrus will revitalize you.

Walk the room slowly and engage in curiosity. Notice different textures, shapes, and growth patterns. Maybe come up with a few questions about the plants you see, and instead of finding the answers on your phone, strike up a conversation with greenhouse staff. Marsha, Molly, and Ashley are a delight to speak with! You could also try asking our resident cats, Sunny and Marigold, but they would likely be sleeping.

As you ponder the treasures of the natural world, don’t forget that February is the month of love. What better way to express that feeling than with flowers? They are here when we need them most; a happy reminder of the best to come. Take the time to reflect on what these blooms might mean to you and the connections you have to those in your life.

Campanula – gratitude and humility

Tender perennial. Small pots available of this vibrant purple variety.

Hellebores – peace and tranquility

Tillandsia – freedom and creativity

Did you know that air plants bloom? Our greenhouse has the largest selection of air plants on Cape Cod.

Aside from our new stock of annual flowers, many houseplants take the cooler winter months and short days as an opportunity to set blooms. Every day there is new growth to admire and to be grateful for. Let us share the love! The next time you visit us, the flowers will surely be glad to see you, and don’t hesitate to stay awhile.
