Rooted on Cape Cod

Rooted on Cape Cod

Winter has traditionally been a time when plant people look back over the past season while anticipating what they want to grow in the coming year. This particular New Year is a special one for Hyannis Country Garden, because it marks our 60th anniversary as a family owned, independent garden center. For any family business such a milestone is quite an accomplishment, but we think that a company that is all about growing plants on Cape Cod has extra reasons to celebrate.

This arial shot shows the original Country Garden fruit store on West Main Street, with the construction of our current building happening just behind the old one. As Hyannis Country Garden prepares to celebrate its 60th year in business, we are appreciating how deep our roots are on the Cape, and we’re looking forward to cultivating future generations of plant lovers and gardeners.

Our Roots are Connected

We recognize that most of our customers have deep roots on the Cape as well. Many of you either grew up on Cape or vacationed here over past years. Some of you chose the Cape as your retirement home because of the many fond memories you have from the past. Others have moved here to take new jobs, raise your kids, or to live closer to family members. At Hyannis Country Garden we have had the pleasure of helping you cultivate beautiful landscapes and plants for the past sixty years, and we look forward to doing so moving into the future.

We love helping local gardeners start growing vegetables. It’s so satisfying when people learn the joys of growing the freshest, most flavorful food on earth.

“Gardening is different here!”

Our customers say this frequently, especially when they first move to the Cape. The soil stays colder in the spring, so we can’t plant seeds or summer annuals as early as people do when they live a distance from the ocean. Our plants must deal with regular winds and moist air, and most of us grow in sand instead of soil. That said, the Cape is a great place to grow gardens! Most plants love the great drainage that sandy soils provide, and our long, warm fall weather balances out the cool, wet spring.

We enjoy helping local gardeners learn how to amend their soil from the top down with regular applications of compost, and it’s very satisfying when we can assist them to create landscapes that feed both body and soul.

Cape Cod gardeners enjoy creating places where they can enjoy flowers, birds and the fragrance of native plants such as summersweet (Clethra), phlox, and sweet bay Magnolia.
Being so close to the ocean means that we have more wind and moisture than other locations. Whether your garden is right on the water or not, we’re all affected by our proximity to the sea.

Supporting Local Wildlife and Waterways

It’s been especially gratifying over the past years to see how united Cape residents have become around the protection of pollinators, other wildlife, and the protection of our waterways. Our customers have asked for organic products that will assist them in creating beautiful landscapes, and they come to us for good information about how to treat problems without doing added harm. The interest in native plants continues, and our section of natives has expanded in response.

Echinacea is a favorite native perennial on the Cape…for flower gardeners, bees, and even the bunnies. (If you want to know how to keep the rabbits from eating your Echinacea, come in and ask us about Plantskydd animal repellant!)
Some of our customers want to plant water-wise gardens that need less irrigation. One plant we frequently recommend is Asclepias tuberosa, the native butterfly weed.

Celebrating Those Roots

In the next year we’re going to continue to applaud this lovely region, and our connections to it. From helping you to grow our signature plant, the blue mophead hydrangea, to providing educational opportunities for you to learn about plants and garden care, we look forward to helping you grow.

These hydrangeas aren’t native to the Cape but they dear to most of our hearts, so we’ll continue to stock many varieties and provide you with the best information about growing these shrubs.
