In The Name of Love

In The Name of Love

As we are celebrating Hyannis Country Garden’s 60th anniversary of being rooted on Cape Cod, songs from 1965 run though our minds. Today, as I watched a truck of shrubs and trees being unloaded, the song by the Supremes popped into my head. Stop, In The Name of Love…not because the nursery stock would break my heart, but because so many people will be happy to have what they need to plant in the name of love.

Every truck brings a load of new plants, fresh from the grower. Those who love topiaries, or want a formal, standard form evergreen as a focal point in their foundation planting or herb garden, will find something that warms their hearts.

For Love of The Landscape

We plant for love in several ways. First, as a way to add plants to our yards and gardens that will make us smile every time we see them. Perhaps you have always wanted a magnolia that will bloom early in the spring. Maybe you’ve been meaning to plant a dwarf Japanese maple or a golden Hinoki false cypress for colorful foliage. Or it could be that after a cold, brown-tinted winter, your goal is add more evergreens around your house. Plant for the love of your landscape.

The new leaves on a Japanese maple made me smile today, as these small trees came off of the truck.

For The Love of Wildlife

Maybe you have wanted to put more plants in your yard and garden that support birds, pollinators, and other wildlife. If you want to place more native plants around your property, download the list of pollinator support plants from our Informational Handouts page. From now on, the trucks will be arriving at Hyannis Country Garden filled with native plants and others that support birds and butterflies.

For the Love of Privacy

I noticed that some of the first plants to arrive in the nursery are those that are commonly used in privacy screening. Green Giant arborvitae, one of the largest and fastest growing screening trees, are already streaming into the garden center in several sizes. Rows of the thinner, darker Emerald Green arborvitae are also arriving, as are holly, skip laurel, and assorted other evergreens.

Some of the first plants we get in are Green Giant arborvitae. These come in several sizes, and once established will grow up to 3 feet per year. Many people combine groups of three Green Giants in a mixed evergreen screening so that they can look at a variety of colors and textures of foliage in their privacy planting.

For the Love of Flowers

In addition to shrubs and trees, April is the month when perennial plants arrive at the garden center. Hyannis Country Garden has one of the largest selection of perennials on Cape Cod, and the first to arrive are now at the front of the nursery. Foxglove, lupine and more are on the shelves and ready to plant. We value perennials because having flowers in our gardens throughout the year makes us happy.

Large foxglove plants sit in front of the rows of assorted perennials. Some of these plants are small in size, making a purchase of several more affordable.

So whether you’re humming songs from 1965 or not, stop by, in the name of love, this April.
