Pretty Presentations of Houseplant Gifts

Plants make great gifts. They are life-affirming, interesting and spirit-lifting. Some plants are to be enjoyed for a couple months, and some become lifelong friends. Occasionally, a houseplant does so well for so long that it gets passed down to daughters, sons or friends. No matter which type you choose, at this time of year, a new houseplant is a reminder of growth at the darkest time of the year.

Whether you’re purchasing plants for yourself or for presents, there are easy but elegant ways to dress them up. Here are some suggestions.

Choose a Decorative Pot Cover

There are many pots that are made to hold standard size greenhouse gift plants. Here, a plain white container was chosen to hold this lovely Cyclamen. After the Cyclamen goes by, another plant in a standard 4″ pot can be put in the white cover.
White covers go with any interior and are especially attractive on a plant that has a lot going on, such as this Cyclamen.

Holiday Plant Containers are Plentiful

We carry a huge variety of holiday pot covers, from tin to ceramic.

A Gift For a Houseplant Lover Without Sunny Windows

Know someone who loves plants but doesn’t have sunny windows? Ferns are perfect for northern exposures or brightly lit offices. Since ferns enjoy being constantly moist, you can put them in containers such as this metal dish that don’t have drainage holes.

Make A Basket Collection

A gift basket doesn’t have to contain sugary treats…it can hold living plants instead. For someone who loves houseplants, a collection of small pots that they can transplant into the containers of their choice is even better than a pre-planted dish garden. This is a good way to give a plant geek a collection without breaking the bank. There are many plants in the front greenhouse at Hyannis Country Garden that come in assorted sizes, from tiny one in pots on up.

First, choose a basket to hold a group of small pots.
Next, pick a group of houseplants. These might be varieties that you know that the recipient doesn’t have, or they could be chosen for a range of foliage colors and textures.
Group the pots in the basket and add a festive bow…no need to replant into the basket, as it’s just the way the plants are presented. Any plant lover knows that these houseplants will put on quick growth when they are each stepped up to a slightly larger pot after the holidays.

Show You Know Who They Are…

If you’re giving a gift to someone who loves to cook, choose a plant such as a citrus tree that does double-duty as a houseplant and edible. Perhaps your friend loves plants but doesn’t remember to water them frequently…succulents are the perfect choice for that person. Or maybe you’re wanting a present for a nature lover who isn’t thrilled about Poinsettias…give that person a basket that shows you know them well.

This Norfolk Island Pine and the Goldcrest Cypress are miniature trees that are easy to grow indoors. A tiny fern was tucked between them to make an arrangement for someone who loves the woods. These plants can be transplanted into larger clay pots by the gift’s recipient.

A Quick Gift When You’re on the Run

In the store and the front greenhouse we have many pre-made holiday plant combinations. Most of these are ideal to give holiday color to someone who doesn’t want a plant that needs to be cared for into the future.

Let us help you find the perfect houseplant, for yourself or for others.
