Cape Cod Proven Winners

Hyannis Country Garden announces that Independence House in Hyannis was chosen to receive a free planting of annuals and perennials. As part of the celebration of Proven Winners Weekend, Country Garden asked individuals to nominate a local non-profit organization that is a “proven winner for Cape Cod.”

Sixteen individuals nominated a total of nine different organizations. A panel of 5 Country Garden employees choose a paragraph written by Sandra Cashen as the winning submission. “I liked how she related her own growth to a garden,” one panel member said. In her submission Sandra wrote that Independence House is a place “where numerous individuals have walked though their doors and blossomed into successful people who have been shown that they can adapt to their environment and grow.”

Employees of Country Garden planted annuals and perennials at Independence House today. The plants have been donated by Pleasant View Nurseries, Proven Winners, and Hyannis Country Garden. The garden center also provided soil amendments and labor. The plantings were installed by Alan Budney, C.L. Fornari, Jessica Holcomb, and Cody Mosca. Photos below!

All of the Country Garden employees agreed that choosing one organization was difficult because the others nominated are clearly also “proven winners for Cape Cod.” The paragraphs written in support of these other organizations made compelling arguments for why plantings would be welcomed at their facilities as well.

Carla Roy, a foreclosure prevention counselor with Housing Assistance Corporation in Hyannis wrote that plantings at their entrance would “spread a little cheer as people step out of their cars to attend an appointment that is often frightening, full of despair and with little hope.”

If any members of the community are interested in doing some good Samaritan plantings for local non-profits, they are urged to contact those organizations that were also nominated as Cape proven winners. What Sandra Cashen wrote in her winning paragraph for Independence House would apply to all the submitted organizations: “A beautiful flower garden at their property would be a symbol of hope and new life for all those who enter their doors.”

The other organizations proposed were: Cape Cod Challenger Club, Buzzards Bay Beautification Group, Housing Assistance Corporation, Osterville Historical Society, Cape Cod Community College, Community Connections Inc, Meetinghouse Farm, Duffy Health Center, and CapeAbilities.
