A Green Roof Fairy House? You Can Grow That!

A Green Roof Fairy House? You Can Grow That!

Make a house for the fairies.

Take two old plastic hanging baskets.

Cut one down to an inch or two high so that you have a shallow dish with the drainage holes on the bottom.

Cut a door opening in the other. You can use heavy duty scissors or tin snips.

Put the saucer-piece on top of the basket with the door and wire together through the drainage holes.

Punch holes around the door with a push-pin. Now break sticks or other natural materials to line the door and fasten on using thin wire. See the photo for details.

Break pieces of bark that are about as high as your house. I used a glue gun to hold them into place around the pot before I wired it all together. After gluing the bark on, I wrapped two lengths of bark-wire (available at garden centers or craft stores) around the siding to hold it more securely. The hot glue won’t hold the bark onto the plastic pot for very long. Other coverings that could be used: sheet moss, scrap lumber, twigs.

Put a shallow layer of soil in the top saucer and plant with low sedum, thyme, creeping oregano or other low plants.

Come into Hyannis Country Garden’s Fairy Gardening Festival on June 23 and 24 and get a handout of detailed instructions for making a house from old hanging flower pots!

What a fun idea for gardeners and even the whole family. Not only the fairy house, but the whole landscape can be an imaginative project!

Very sweet. Do you have any idea how it would hold up outdoors? I built a fairy house from buddleia cuttings 4 years ago, and have been shocked that it has survived 4 winters already, and is still standing. See photos here.

Great fairy house from Buddleia! I think that our green roof house will hold up for awhile since the structure is made of plastic hanging basket pots. The bark was initially hot glued to hold it in place but all was wired together after that. We’ll do up a few more soon, I think, and plant the roofs. Maybe put a lawn chair on one of the roofs so that the nature spirits feel welcome to linger there on summer evenings. Enjoy!
